Straps and Watch Bracelets
There are a great deal of bracelets on the market these days. The 3 main types are steel, leather and polyurethane. The difference between them comes down to choice and affordability. Steel bracelets tend to be a bit dearer than leather, and leather tends to be a bit dearer than polyurethane. Poly bracelets on the other hand are considered to give a more sporty look, while leather and stainless steel have a more classy appeal.
Steel and Stainless Steel
When it comes to steel bracelets, these can usually be broken up further into stainless steel, gold and platinum types. As discussed in other articles throughout the My3345 encyclopaedia the difference between these is mainly in price, but with respect to gold, durability may also be a concern.
Leather
Leather straps and bracelets are soft, light and comfortable, but have the poorest longevity. They tend to wear out within a year and will harbour fungus within the leather fibre, giving rise to a certain smell after a while. So leather straps are mainly designed for infrequent use. The band cannot be reconditioned and usually can just be replaced. Longevity may be increased by the use of a deployant buckle similar to stainless steel bands, rather than the typical hole-and-nail approach. This will reduce tugging and pulling on the strap and as a result, add longevity. Leather straps are the most comfortable in the long run as the leather will fit around the wrist like a glove, so it is all the more important to preserve it in good condition. For greater comfort, wear leather straps loosely rather than tightly.
Polyurethane
Polyurethane straps, are light, comfortable and resistant. They are a good choice for when a sporty look is desired. They are less suited for dressing up, but excellent for dressing down. In time, the only issues with these types of straps and bands is that they become a little brittle, perhaps less flexible than when initially purchased. Expect to get around 3-5 years out of this straps.
In the end it all comes down to convenience, price and choice. Wear the strap that suits you and the occasion best. The great advantage of today’s watches is the ease with which straps can be changed. With almost all J.Springs watches you can easily interchange stainless steel for leather or polyurethane at your discretion. This added flexibility can make your watch look always new by simply changing the bracelet.
