Bezels and Time Measurement

The most common functionality afforded by the bezel is the chronometric function. There are two generic types of bezels. These are the count-up and count-down bezels. The count up bezel counts time starting from zero and incrementing. For example, if one wants to track 10 minutes of time, he will move the zero marking of the bezel to line up with the minute hand, irrespective of where the minute hand is positioned at any point in time. If a count-down bezel is used, the user will line up the 10 minute marking on the bezel with the minute hand and wait for the hand to move to zero.

It is also common place to hear of uni-directional and bi-directional bezels. Between these two types there isn’t a great deal of difference, apart from what the name suggests.
